The yield-cutting soyabean rust fungus was discovered in three new counties in Alabama, the US Agriculture Department said late Thursday on its rust-monitoring Web site.

The fungus was found on a kudzu leaf in St. Clair County and in commercial soyabean fields in Marengo and Dallas Counties. This week alone 13 new counties in Alabama have found new cases of soya rust.

Ed Sikora, a plant pathologist with Auburn University, said in a report posted on the USDA's soya rust Web site that it was possible more cases of rust could be found on late season soyabeans, volunteer soyabeans, and kudzu patches until the first frost.

Soya rust has been found in 29 Alabama counties in 2005.
